WHAT IS CAPSTONE?

On May 29, 2020, SDSU Georgia hosts the virtual Capstone/Senior Design Project Showcase. The event will display the projects that senior students have undertaken in their final year. This is the second annual Capstone Showcase held by SDSU Georgia.

This year, six teams of Electrical and Computer Engineering students present their projects to solve the real-world problems posed by industry representatives. Capstone 2020 was sponsored by Efes Brewery in Georgia – JSC Lomisi and Ilia State University Medical Program.

The Capstone Project, like its namesake, represents the pinnacle achievement of a student’s academic career. It is a two-semester senior design project that all SDSU students are required to complete in their final year.

Capstone Projects are commonly used in the United States to test the academic, intellectual, and critical thinking skills that students have acquired throughout their education while giving them valuable hands-on experience in their intended professions. The idea of a capstone project is similar to the Diploma Research commonly used in Georgia, but Capstone is more focused on teamwork and includes practical aspects of designing a product.

Senior students work in teams structured like an industrial design team, with specific tasks for each member based on their major and experience. They work under the joint guidance of a faculty advisor and a mentor from the industry on real projects and problems that come directly from SDSU’s partners.

Teams are expected to go through the full sequence of activities involved in bringing a product to market. This includes detailed analysis, planning, designing, testing, and making modifications as needed, ensuring the timely delivery of a functional finished product.

Upon completing the Capstone Project, students will have demonstrated their skills and ability to learn and adapt while working through the stages of an industry project.

Why sponsor a Capstone/Senior Design Project?

The Capstone Project allows a business to pose any problem or current project that they are working on and receive a fresh perspective from a group of senior-year SDSU students, supported by a faculty member. By sponsoring a team, companies will also help the students develop their solutions and create a prototype. At the same time, Capstone Project is a unique chance for a company to scout a talented group of individuals for potential future employment. Functionally, the capstone project is a prolonged internship for students who get to know their sponsor organizations while companies get to know them.

How can a business sponsor a Capstone/Senior Design Project?

Take advantage of the opportunity and sponsor Capstone/Senior Design project for the 2020-2021 academic year by submitting a proposal(s) that includes the project title, objectives of the project, a brief description, deliverables, and time frame before September 2020.
